INTRODUCTION

WELCOME TO Pioden (pronounced: pee-or-den). This blog features all news and photos from the litter of Pug puppies I am helping to raise. The mother is called Madge and she is six years old. She's my mother's dog but is a family pet. Due to the work involved in raising puppies, and the fact that I adore babies of all kinds, I always help out. I have raised a seven-puppy litter before; when I'm not raising puppies I work as a dog-sitter.

HISTORY

Madge successfully raised seven puppies in the beginning of 2006. My mother kept one of the boys, Fall Out Boy, and he will be going to Crufts next year. While I kept one of the girls, Sweepie, who will be having a litter of her own when she's old enough. Madge visited the same dog as last time, so the puppies born now will be true brothers and sisters to the original litter.

My mother is a qualified vet-nurse so everything is done very safely and for the best interest of Madge.

SAFETY

Please be aware when buying puppies. Do not buy from puppy famers/dealers. Always view the puppies with their mother. Make sure the animals are well looked after and kept in a clean environment. If you are buying a Pedigree dog only buy one with the correct papers - if they don't have papers then they are not Pedigree dogs, or have been acquired illegally.

For more information, please, please read the following article: A Guide To Buying A Puppy Safely

DISCLAIMER

Raising puppies is a time-consuming and expensive venture. Please think carefully before breeding with your dog. To stop unwanted pregnancies you should get your dog neutered. For females that takes place after their first season; for males it can be done at any time.

Growing Up & Moving On

Saturday, 16 February 2008 | 19:59

Dolores left us on 19th January.

She's gone to a really great home and is very happy there. Saying goodbye was really hard for me, though. I didn't realise just how much I'd been hoping I'd somehow be able to keep her until she left. It's been great to hear how well she's been getting on and I know she's in the best place she could be.

Wednesday has stayed with Mammy and Daddy and is very happy playing with her mother, elder brother and Aunty Areau.

She still comes to visit me and vice versa very often. Her and Sweepie are getting on great. She's full of way too much energy and always leaves me exhausted after our days together.

Unfortunately we had some very bad news about one of the puppies from the previous litter. She has been sold on to somewhere that is not very nice and we're still in the process of tracking her down and bringing her back home where it's safe. We've all been very upset by it and, since I've moved out of home and can't be there as much as I'd like to be, Mammy and I came to the decision not to have any more puppies. Perhaps in a few years time we might feel a little better about it but we've both said we'd only do it if one or both of us want to keep a pup from the litter. So Madge and Sweepie have both been spayed now. We always knew Madge would after this litter, and I am very happy Sweepie was able to as well because I was never keen on her having pups because she's such a baby herself.

So this will probably be the last post I make on this blog. I'll post any future news/pictures about Wednesday on my blog.

'Bye xxx

Moving House

Wednesday, 2 January 2008 | 22:38

I have some more pictures of the pups to add from their first Christmas, but I'm moving out at the weekend so I don't have time to add them just yet. As soon as I'm settled with an internet connection I'll update with the pictures.

The puppies have both had an excellent Christmas and New Years. They got two massive toy ducks each, which they sleep with every night. Dolores met her new owners, who she will be going to live with in a few weeks time. And they spent New Years Eve running round the house like loonies.

Because I'm moving out of home I won't be with the puppies as much. Being seperated from them is going to be really hard because they have been my life for the last three months. But, what with Dolores leaving soon, and therefore them both growing up and away from me, I think now is the best time to make the move. They are very big and mature for their age and I know they're going to have amazing lives without their Nanny Ys looking over their shoulders all the time. Of course, I will still see them every weekend, until Dolores leaves for her new life, then I'll only be able to watch Wednesday mature into an adult Pug. Because there's only two of them in this litter saying goodbye is going to be exceptionally hard.

The First Bath

Sunday, 16 December 2007 | 11:29

Check out the little stinkers before their baths, looking very smug in their puppy smellyness...

First up was Dolores, who wasn't very impressed at all...

Next up was Wednesday, who took it in her stride...

Clean puppies!

Fighting Pups

Friday, 7 December 2007 | 14:30

The pups have learned that fighting one another is fun. So they spend most of their time now rolling each other around the floor, seeing who will win.

And here's just some gorgeous photos I had to share...

Feeling Ill

Wednesday, 28 November 2007 | 12:14

Sorry I haven't updated this week - I've been really ill with a cold. I've got lots of new photos to add so I'll probably add them tomorrow when I'm feeling a bit better. The pups are doing great - amazingly well, in fact. They're both running around all the time, wearing us all out. In fact I don't think Madge is getting much sleep at all anymore.

Growing Up

Monday, 19 November 2007 | 13:28

The girls are growing so fast now. They started the weekend stumbling and ended it almost able to walk.

They still fall over but they're quicker to pick themselves up now.

They've started playing together, too. Because she's a bit bigger, and a little more advanced, Dolores pushes Wednesday round a bit. But they're firm friends.

They are awake for longer now as well, which means they want constant amusement.

Introductions

Thursday, 15 November 2007 | 18:13

As the pups are getting bigger, they are getting to meet more of the family. As they learn to do their clumsy walk, they also get to spend more time with the new family members. At the moment, the two bigger dogs, and incidently they are the two older dogs as well - Martha and Areau - aren't spending much time with them. Being older they know not to intrude.

Things between Sweepie and the pups is going really well. She's still a little scared of them...

But is definitely calming down a lot...

Falls, on the other hand, started out confused...

And just got more and more scared by them...

Bless him. He's getting better around them but he's still not sure what they are.

And to prove I am doing my job, plus that the babies are starting to learn that Auntie Ysabel means cuddles, check out the love I got first from Wednesday:

And then Dolore passed out on my chest (doesn't she have a fat arse? ;D):

Open Eyes

Monday, 12 November 2007 | 14:42

Sunday morning the girls opened their eyes for the first time and took their first blurry look at the world.

Dolores was so excited she was squirming everywhere. She can barely sit still anymore. Whereas Wednesday is a little more overwhelmed. She squirmed for a while when I first picked her up to introduce myself properly until she caught my scent and remembered who I was. She quietened immediately and we spent about ten minutes just looking at each other.

Dolores loves the camera already! She's continuously staring into it and clambering clumsily towards me.

Wednesday still isn't sure what it is but popped her head up for a good gaze,

Dolores is full of energy. She's trying to walk already and keeps tumbling around the room. She's already trying to play with Madge, chewing on her ears and climbing up her side. It's adorable to watch because during her last litter there was just too many pups for Madge to play with at such an early age.

Wednesday is trying her best to keep up with her sister but just doesn't have the same amount of energy, or muscle in her leg.

During the next week the hard work will really begin to kick in for me. As soon as they can walk properly they're going to have me running round after them all day! And I can't wait!

The Pups Meet Big Sister

Thursday, 8 November 2007 | 14:13

Tuesday afternoon, Wednesday and Dolores met their big sister, Sweepie, properly for the first time. Of course their eyes are still shut so they couldn't technically see her but she did introduce herself. She was a little nervous, a little confused by what they were and what they might want from her, but overall she showed a softness and patience that none of us have seen in her before.

Wednesday was so excited by the introductions that she did her party trick of rolling onto her back and getting stuck like a turtle.

Madge was really calm about it, as most mother's are when their elder daughters meet their new pups. She was very welcoming and encouraged Sweep to wash the babies bottoms, but Sweepie wasn't quite sure whether she could do that or not. The babies took full advantage of Madge lying down relaxed to get a quick feed in again...

After food Wednesday decided it had all been too much for her and gave her second party-trick: the huge yawn.

The pups crawled their way towards one another, rolled blindly together and fell asleep,

When I can borrow Mammy's camera I'll have to record Dolores when she's sleeping because she twitches non-stop and flaps her ears like Dumbo!

New Routines

Monday, 5 November 2007 | 11:48

Madge was a manic mother for just over twenty-four hours, then she calmed down a lot. I spent a lot of the weekend sat next to the cage so that the door could be left open, which meant Madge could come and go as she pleased, plus she trusts me to look after the babies while she's out of the room.

She's fed them so much I think they may well be the biggest five-day-old Pugs ever in the history of Pug babies. But they are also the healthiest and happiest little pups, too.

The hungriest, and biggest, of the twins is Dolores, whereas Wednesday is much more of a Mammy's Girl and is always cuddled close to Madge, as this picture shows perfectly:

Check out how adorable Wednesday is in this picture, taken during one of their many naps:

Madge is now spending more time out of the cage, but still spends the majority of her day with the babies. Because they're so big and strong they will be able to come out and play sooner than is normal :)

Today is my first official day as Puppy-Sitter. Mammy went back to work today so I am fully in charge. I need to set up a new routine for everyone so that Madge knows what will happen and when so there's no stress. I think I'll get the pups out in the afternoon but the time they are allowed to stay out will, of course, be quite short at the moment; but as they get older that time will stretch out.

Don't I have the cutest babies?

Bonding

Friday, 2 November 2007 | 13:45

Things are going much better for Madge and the puppies today. I had to stay up, sleeping in between feeds on the sofa, on the first night, just to make sure Madge was feeding the pups. She didn't really want to but we had to insist she did because obviously it's better for the puppies to be fed by Madge rather than by bottle by us.

Madge was much better in the morning when my mother took over the monitoring of the feeds. By nine o'clock she was getting into the bed and feeding the babies herself. But she was still a little unsure, a little frightened, and confused. The poor thing didn't really know what had happened. She'd gone to sleep pregnant and woken up sore with two huge puppies expecting food, attention and love.

So, to give Madge a break and to check on the pups, we put all the other animals out of the living-room and got the two girls out for a cuddle.

It helped Madge so much because seeing us handling the puppies got her worried for them and that helped her to start to want to protect them.

Aren't they the cutest little things?

Because Madge was getting a bit stressed by the puppies being out of the cage, we put them back in and she immediately went into the bed and started feeding them. This continued throughout the day, and by dinner time that evening the puppies were fit to bursting with milk!

Madge's hormones have really kicked in now and because she's got enough milk for at least six babies she is probably over-feeding the little ones, but not by much because they do stop when they get full, or else they fall off the nipple and go to sleep. She's always a frantic mother in the first few days. She's very protective and won't let them out of her sight for long. It's really sweet and we're all really relieved that she's finally been able to bond with them. Although you can clearly see she's still a little confused and often goes looking for more pups because she thinks she must have more than just two (due to the fact that she's had big litters previously - her first litter was six, her second eight).

Now that she's bonded properly we won't be able to bring the puppies out again for probably another week because it's too much stress for Madge. Once they're a bit bigger and she's calmer they'll start to investigate the new world they've been born into :)

Labour & Birth

Wednesday, 31 October 2007 | 15:36

Madge has had a hard weekend. She started her pre-labour Sunday morning and it continued slowly up until Tuesday (yesterday).

At about 1pm Tuesday afternoon she started to pant heavily and show the classic signs of wanting to nest (hiding under cupboards and in corners). This continued throughout the day. Mammy and I stayed up with her all night but at 3am she eventually fell asleep and Mammy told me to go to bed.

This morning (Wednesday), she was on day 65 of her pregnancy. We couldn't wait any longer in case harm came to Madge and the puppies. Mammy, Jemma and I took Madge down to the vets (where Mammy works) and she had to have a cesarean.

She'd shown some very strange behaviour. She'd panted for about twenty-four hours non-stop but had not shown any urge to push. During her last litter she delivered fine in the normal way and we'd been hoping she could do it again. But unfortunately that was not to be.

When the vet opened her up, I heard her say, "What have you been breeding?" A couple of minutes later Mammy was rubbing a wet puppy, which was about the size of a Pug puppy when it is about a week old. Once the mucus was out of its mouth I was handed the first of our new puppies.

She's a girl and looks just like her big sister Sweepie. We've called her Dora Dolores (Dolores for short ;D).

Once Dolores was warmed up and safely with her Auntie Jemma, I popped my head into the operating theatre and watched the vet pull another huge puppy from Madge's stomach. "You're guesses were all wrong," she joked. "There's only two."

The second, and last puppy, was also a girl, who looks a lot like her mother; she's a litter darker than Dolores as well. We've called her Ruby Wednesday (Wednesday for short ;D).

While Madge was stitched back up and woken up, the twins woke up as well and started bleating. They shouted and shouted for attention. For the record Wednesday is the loudest; Dolores whimpers more than screams. Then they decided to start trying to crawl out the basket! They were very adventurous for puppies who were only fifteen minutes old.

Once Madge was feeling up to it, we bundled ourselves back into the car and drove home. The puppies and Madge went into the cage and Mammy encouraged the girls to suckle.

Madge is fussing at the moment and doesn't seem to want to feed the babies. This is a risk with cesarean births. It might be just that she's very sore and tired and that when she's feeling better she'll be more inclined to feed them. Last time she was great so we're not worrying too much about that yet.

The other dogs have come in and sniffed the puppies through the cage - obviously they're not allowed too close yet. They were all very interested and stood listening to the babies bleating for quite some time.

Madge and the puppies are asleep now. As is my mother who hasn't slept properly in about four days now. I'm exhausted but I can't sleep in the day so I'll just wait until night-time.

So, I am now the proud auntie/nanny to two strapping young girls. There was no way Madge could have passed them naturally because they were just too big (we still don't know how that happened considering she went to the same dog as last time and she had eight normal-sized puppies then), which at least makes the cesarean option feel better.

Labour Pains

Sunday, 28 October 2007 | 10:34

Madge has started going into labour. It doesn't happen very quickly for her; she'll suffer the pre-contractions for up to forty-eight hours before she actually goes into proper labour. But from how she is at the moment we're all expecting it to happen some time later today; it'll be tomorrow morning at the latest.

Please wish her luck :)

Cage Set-Up

Friday, 26 October 2007 | 12:06

Last night we set-up the cage Madge uses when she has puppies. It's a big thing that we put in the corner of the living-room so that Madge and the babies are always in the hub of the house, so are therefore rarely left alone.

Madge will spend the first couple of weeks in the cage with the puppies, coming and going when she pleases to have food or just for a break. When the puppies get a big bigger they'll live in the cage alone so that they are always safe and can get as much sleep as they need. They'll, of course, spend a lot of time out of the cage with us but this cage gives them safety and a place to call home.

And, just like last time, Mammy got into the cage with Madge for a while to keep her company.

Once in the bed Madge started looking for the puppies already!

She won't sleep in the cage now until the puppies are born. For the next few nights Mammy is going to sleep downstairs on the sofa with Madge just in case she goes into labour.

The final preperations are being made now, and it's getting very exciting.

Eight Weeks Swelling

Monday, 22 October 2007 | 11:54

Madge is now just over eight weeks pregnant and she's really starting to feel the swell of her stomach. She doesn't have the energy to do two walks a day anymore.

This weekend I felt the puppies kick for the first time. It was Saturday night and I quickly got everyone to have a feel. I don't think Madge appreciated all the palms on her stomach ;)

Here she is snuggled up in bed with her best friend, Areau (who is a rottweiler/labrador):

Then Sweepie (Madge's daughter from her first litter) joined her in the bed. Sweepie doesn't really understand what's going on but does insist we all feel her stomach after we've finished with Madge. Sweepie is eighteen months old.

Madge's stomach is getting bigger by the day. On Day 57 she looks like this:

And by the end of those quick snaps Madge was exhausted and quickly fell asleep. Aww.

Madge

Monday, 15 October 2007 | 11:50

Introducing Madge, the mother-to-be.

Here she is resting in her bed, in the dining-room:

And this is her playing with one of the many toys littering the floor, in her other bed in the kitchen:

And here she is showing off her seven-weeks-pregnant physique:

Accidents

Last night, in her excitement at greeting whoever walks through the living-room door, Madge rolled off the sofa awkwardly and has sprained something in her back leg. Thankfully, it's not too serious and just needs a few days rest to right itself again. She's getting very round now but she has really high excitement levels, too, so she hasn't quite re-learnt how to act now that she's seven weeks pregnant!
