INTRODUCTION
WELCOME TO Pioden (pronounced: pee-or-den). This blog features all news and photos from the litter of Pug puppies I am helping to raise. The mother is called Madge and she is six years old. She's my mother's dog but is a family pet. Due to the work involved in raising puppies, and the fact that I adore babies of all kinds, I always help out. I have raised a seven-puppy litter before; when I'm not raising puppies I work as a dog-sitter.
HISTORY
Madge successfully raised seven puppies in the beginning of 2006. My mother kept one of the boys, Fall Out Boy, and he will be going to Crufts next year. While I kept one of the girls, Sweepie, who will be having a litter of her own when she's old enough. Madge visited the same dog as last time, so the puppies born now will be true brothers and sisters to the original litter.

My mother is a qualified vet-nurse so everything is done very safely and for the best interest of Madge.

SAFETY
Please be aware when buying puppies. Do not buy from puppy famers/dealers. Always view the puppies with their mother. Make sure the animals are well looked after and kept in a clean environment. If you are buying a Pedigree dog only buy one with the correct papers - if they don't have papers then they are not Pedigree dogs, or have been acquired illegally.
For more information, please, please read the following article: A Guide To Buying A Puppy Safely
DISCLAIMER
Raising puppies is a time-consuming and expensive venture. Please think carefully before breeding with your dog.
To stop unwanted pregnancies you should get your dog neutered. For females that takes place after their first season; for males it can be done at any time.

Feeling Ill
Wednesday, 28 November 2007 | 12:14
Sorry I haven't updated this week - I've been really ill with a cold. I've got lots of new photos to add so I'll probably add them tomorrow when I'm feeling a bit better. The pups are doing great - amazingly well, in fact. They're both running around all the time, wearing us all out. In fact I don't think Madge is getting much sleep at all anymore. Growing Up
Monday, 19 November 2007 | 13:28
The girls are growing so fast now. They started the weekend stumbling and ended it almost able to walk. They still fall over but they're quicker to pick themselves up now. They've started playing together, too. Because she's a bit bigger, and a little more advanced, Dolores pushes Wednesday round a bit. But they're firm friends. They are awake for longer now as well, which means they want constant amusement. Labels: dolores, photos, wednesday

Introductions
Thursday, 15 November 2007 | 18:13
As the pups are getting bigger, they are getting to meet more of the family. As they learn to do their clumsy walk, they also get to spend more time with the new family members. At the moment, the two bigger dogs, and incidently they are the two older dogs as well - Martha and Areau - aren't spending much time with them. Being older they know not to intrude. Things between Sweepie and the pups is going really well. She's still a little scared of them... But is definitely calming down a lot... Falls, on the other hand, started out confused... And just got more and more scared by them... Bless him. He's getting better around them but he's still not sure what they are. And to prove I am doing my job, plus that the babies are starting to learn that Auntie Ysabel means cuddles, check out the love I got first from Wednesday: And then Dolore passed out on my chest (doesn't she have a fat arse? ;D): Labels: dolores, photos, wednesday

Open Eyes
Monday, 12 November 2007 | 14:42
Sunday morning the girls opened their eyes for the first time and took their first blurry look at the world. Dolores was so excited she was squirming everywhere. She can barely sit still anymore. Whereas Wednesday is a little more overwhelmed. She squirmed for a while when I first picked her up to introduce myself properly until she caught my scent and remembered who I was. She quietened immediately and we spent about ten minutes just looking at each other. Dolores loves the camera already! She's continuously staring into it and clambering clumsily towards me. Wednesday still isn't sure what it is but popped her head up for a good gaze, Dolores is full of energy. She's trying to walk already and keeps tumbling around the room. She's already trying to play with Madge, chewing on her ears and climbing up her side. It's adorable to watch because during her last litter there was just too many pups for Madge to play with at such an early age. Wednesday is trying her best to keep up with her sister but just doesn't have the same amount of energy, or muscle in her leg. During the next week the hard work will really begin to kick in for me. As soon as they can walk properly they're going to have me running round after them all day! And I can't wait! Labels: dolores, Madge, photos, wednesday

The Pups Meet Big Sister
Thursday, 8 November 2007 | 14:13
Tuesday afternoon, Wednesday and Dolores met their big sister, Sweepie, properly for the first time. Of course their eyes are still shut so they couldn't technically see her but she did introduce herself. She was a little nervous, a little confused by what they were and what they might want from her, but overall she showed a softness and patience that none of us have seen in her before. Wednesday was so excited by the introductions that she did her party trick of rolling onto her back and getting stuck like a turtle. Madge was really calm about it, as most mother's are when their elder daughters meet their new pups. She was very welcoming and encouraged Sweep to wash the babies bottoms, but Sweepie wasn't quite sure whether she could do that or not. The babies took full advantage of Madge lying down relaxed to get a quick feed in again... After food Wednesday decided it had all been too much for her and gave her second party-trick: the huge yawn. The pups crawled their way towards one another, rolled blindly together and fell asleep, When I can borrow Mammy's camera I'll have to record Dolores when she's sleeping because she twitches non-stop and flaps her ears like Dumbo! New Routines
Monday, 5 November 2007 | 11:48
Madge was a manic mother for just over twenty-four hours, then she calmed down a lot. I spent a lot of the weekend sat next to the cage so that the door could be left open, which meant Madge could come and go as she pleased, plus she trusts me to look after the babies while she's out of the room. She's fed them so much I think they may well be the biggest five-day-old Pugs ever in the history of Pug babies. But they are also the healthiest and happiest little pups, too. The hungriest, and biggest, of the twins is Dolores, whereas Wednesday is much more of a Mammy's Girl and is always cuddled close to Madge, as this picture shows perfectly: Check out how adorable Wednesday is in this picture, taken during one of their many naps: Madge is now spending more time out of the cage, but still spends the majority of her day with the babies. Because they're so big and strong they will be able to come out and play sooner than is normal :) Today is my first official day as Puppy-Sitter. Mammy went back to work today so I am fully in charge. I need to set up a new routine for everyone so that Madge knows what will happen and when so there's no stress. I think I'll get the pups out in the afternoon but the time they are allowed to stay out will, of course, be quite short at the moment; but as they get older that time will stretch out. Don't I have the cutest babies? Labels: dolores, Madge, photos, wednesday

Bonding
Friday, 2 November 2007 | 13:45
Things are going much better for Madge and the puppies today. I had to stay up, sleeping in between feeds on the sofa, on the first night, just to make sure Madge was feeding the pups. She didn't really want to but we had to insist she did because obviously it's better for the puppies to be fed by Madge rather than by bottle by us. Madge was much better in the morning when my mother took over the monitoring of the feeds. By nine o'clock she was getting into the bed and feeding the babies herself. But she was still a little unsure, a little frightened, and confused. The poor thing didn't really know what had happened. She'd gone to sleep pregnant and woken up sore with two huge puppies expecting food, attention and love. So, to give Madge a break and to check on the pups, we put all the other animals out of the living-room and got the two girls out for a cuddle. It helped Madge so much because seeing us handling the puppies got her worried for them and that helped her to start to want to protect them. Aren't they the cutest little things? Because Madge was getting a bit stressed by the puppies being out of the cage, we put them back in and she immediately went into the bed and started feeding them. This continued throughout the day, and by dinner time that evening the puppies were fit to bursting with milk! Madge's hormones have really kicked in now and because she's got enough milk for at least six babies she is probably over-feeding the little ones, but not by much because they do stop when they get full, or else they fall off the nipple and go to sleep. She's always a frantic mother in the first few days. She's very protective and won't let them out of her sight for long. It's really sweet and we're all really relieved that she's finally been able to bond with them. Although you can clearly see she's still a little confused and often goes looking for more pups because she thinks she must have more than just two (due to the fact that she's had big litters previously - her first litter was six, her second eight). Now that she's bonded properly we won't be able to bring the puppies out again for probably another week because it's too much stress for Madge. Once they're a bit bigger and she's calmer they'll start to investigate the new world they've been born into :) Labels: dolores, Madge, photos, wednesday
